First Tunisia-born signed by an NBA team

Salah Mejri has been signed by the Dallas Mavericks, the team announced on Thursday.

The 29-year-old, who last played for Euroleague giants Real Madrid, has become the first Tunisia-born player to be signed by an NBA team.

The 7-foot-2 center joins Senegalese Maurice Ndour who was signed by the Mavericks last week.

In 34 ACB league games with Real Madrid – winners of the Euroleague, Spanish League and Cup Del Rey – Mejri averaged 4.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in 8.6 minutes.

He increased increased his numbers 5 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in eight Euroleague games for the Spanish outfit.

According to the Mavs.com, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

An influential member of the Tunisian national team, Mejri is expected to represent his country at AfroBasket 2015, which will be hosted in his country from 19 to 30 August. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. In his international resume, Mejri counts with the MVP award of the 2011 AfroBasket held in Madagascar, in which Tunisia stunned eleven-time African champions Angola in the final to win their first-ever African title.
